The Transport and Logistics Centre was established in 2000. It acts as a "think tank" for new ideas in capability building in T&L. It also provides advice to the T&L industry in matters of workforce planning and skills development - especially mentoring, innovation and knowledge sharing.
TALC is currently working with companies and unions and in T&L industry, and with the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure and Transport, Infrastructure Australia, several industry Associations including the State based Freight Councils, AFIF, LAA, CILTA, SCLAA, ARTIO, VTA, APICS and AITPM; and with State agencies including NSW RTA. TALC supports the Research Forum at the national SMART Conference. We also have a close working relationship in terms of research and field work with the Australian School of Business at the University of NSW, and the Workforce Futures Centre at Macquarie University.

MAJOR COASTAL SHIPPING REFORM ANNOUNCED 9th September 2011
The Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, The Hon Anthony Albanese MHR, announced on Friday 9th September 2011 in Sydney a sweeping reform of Australian coastal shipping. This is a "once in a generation" opportunity to revitalise Australian flagged vessels and for employment of Australian crews on Australian ships.
TALC was pleased to be able to assist in the development of this policy in the key area of skills and workforce planning. Dr Daryll Hull, Managing Director of TALC, Chaired the Industry Reference Group at the invitation of the Minister and the group produced a series of recommendations, some of which were announced as policy actions on Friday - the creation of a national Maritime Workforce Development Forum, a workforce planning model and more action to support registered training organisations across the country.
DR DARYLL HULL ADDRESSES ASEA 2011 ON 29th September 2011 in Sydney
This annual event brings the shipping industry together to examine key policy issues. Dr Hull outlined the findings of the Industry Reference Group on Training and Workforce Development set up by the Commonwealth Government in early 2011, which led in part to the reform strategy announced in Sydney on 9th September 2011.
NATIONAL TLWAG FORUM A GREAT SUCCESS 7th and 8th September in Brisbane
In Brisbane on 7th and 8th September representatives from every State and Territory met under the T&L Workforce Advisory Group (TLWAG) umbrella to discuss action for 2012, and to reflect on their many successes in 2011. There were discussions on job creation programmes, mentoring, workforce development, promotion of T&L careers and more. Hundreds of new jobs have been created through these initiatives. Brett Reed, Project Manager with TALC has been instrumental in facilitating this network and will become even more active in 2012 in this regard.
The delegates at the Forum mapped out an ambitious strategy for 2012 and they have invited TALC to support their local endeavours at the national level. This we are pleased to do. TALC will provide a networking and research system that gathers up all the good ideas, circulates them to all TLWAGs, develops plans to take them forward and work with all States and Territories to strengthen the network - and extend it to other groups such as CILTA, the ARA, ATA and various industry and professional bodies.
TALC SPONSORS NATIONAL MENTORING WORKSHOP on 10th November 2011 in Sydney
TALC convened a national workshop in Sydney on mentoring as a tool for professional and personal development. This was by invitation only and will included all those who have developed new programmes since the first national workshop convened by TALC in 2005. 35 active people from mnay organisations and all T&L modes (especialy rail) spent the day networking and swapping "war stories."Arthur Banos, who led the first national TALC strategy in this area agreed to return and assist TALC in this second phase. The learnings from the workshop will provide new beginnings for national collaboration in this space. TALC is working closely with LAA, SCLAA and CILTA in this development. The participants have asked for another workshop in 2012 to target specific ideas and strategies to assist practical application of mentoring on the ground.
COLLABORATIVE INFRASTRUCTURE REPORT PRESENTED TO INFRASTRUCTURE AUSTRALIA in September 2011
After 12 months of evidence based research, TALC has completed a leading edge study on the use of collaboration as an organisation tool for improving the operational outcomes of already built and newly planned infrastructure projects. This report is now with Infrastructure Australia for further consideration. It will add value to their work, and takes the debate to a new level. Once Infrastructure Australia approves the Report it will be available to the public via the TALC Research Section of the website. Linda Carruthers was the Project Officer concerned and her work stands out as an excellent example of what can be achieved through dedicated research and investigation. Together with Dr Daryll Hull, Managing Director of TALC, she produced a succinct and challenging study that will inform future policy in this area.
DR DARYLL HULL ADDRESSES TRANSPORT AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE 28th and 29th September 2011 in Sydney
This conference allowed TALC to showcase the conclusions and lessons from the Infrastructure Australia Collaborative Infrastructure Report. Dr Hull outlined the general principles derived from the evidence based research.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON THE MOVE during 2011 and 2012
The Transport and Logistics Certification Council (TLCC) continues to provide a national focus for the award of the CPL (Certified Professional Logistician) and CTP (Certified Transport Planner) under the umbrella of the 5 main industry Associations across Australia. John Bowdler, Relationship Manager for TALC provides a support service to the Associations and to those seeking to register for the awards. TLCC has seen a surge in CPL applications since the Chief of the Joint Logistics Command of the Australian Defence Force, Air Vice Marshal Margaret Staib became a CPL recently. Her commitment to the programme is a credit to the work of the Associations in promoting the TLCC.
TALC SUPPORTS REVIEW OF MARITIME AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM AT AUSTRALIAN MARITIME COLLEGE
Dr Daryll Hull was invited to join a review panel for the Australian Maritime College in August and September 2011 to examine the relevance and academic framework for the maritime and logistics management courses on offer. The review process involved on site meetings which included both staff and students. It was a refreshing look at an important area of learning, and reinforced the view that the Australian Maritime College is an important national institution for the country.
UNSW AND TALC JOIN IN SUCCESSFUL ARC LINKAGE GRANT 2011-2013
TALC and the Australian School of Business at UNSW, along with other industry partners, have partnered in a project to study the future of aircraft maintenance in Australia: workforce capability, aviation safety and industry development. ARC Linkage Grant LP110100335. The UNSW staff involved include Professors Ian Hampson, Anne Williamson and Anne Junor.
TALC TO PROJECT MANAGE NEW MEDIA PROGRAM FOR RAIL,TRAM AND BUS UNION (RTBU) 2011-2012
The ACTU has funded the national office of the RTBU to establish a social media presence to assist the union's members to understand the industrial relations implications of the Fair Work Act. Dr Daryll Hull will act as an advisor and project coordinator to ensure that the social media platform delivers the most accessible and easily understood information for the union's members as they need it. This will include the development of a network of trained delegates and officials who will maintain and operate the on line presence.
ONLINE DIRECTORY FOR ASSOCIATIONS
As part of its ongoing committment to the sector, TALC is revisiting the directory of industry and professional assoications in T&L it produced in 2006. The plan is to provide an open access website in which associations can choose to post information about themselves and their activities. This will provide a more complete view of the sector and the many organisations who have members in the T&L business. John Bowdler, who also works on the TLCC, will be managing this project and he will be contacting groups and associations in the next few months to invite them to join the directory.
