QUEENSLAND CONGRATULATED FOR ADOPTING SUCCESSFUL SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CAREERS INITIATIVE

The South Australian Freight Council (SAFC) announced today that the outstanding success of its popular Logistics Information and Navigation Centre (LINC) had attracted the attention of Queensland Transport and the Queensland logistics industry.

A specific, State-based version of the program – where careers and other key information available on the site is specific to Queensland – "went live" this week at

LINC is a web-based resource that enables the public, business and the freight industry to access information on jobs and career pathways, industry sector information, provides assistance in locating service providers and major facilities, and contains fact sheets on diverse topics including regulatory change.

Youth and other job seekers are able to investigate jobs and plan career pathways through the transport and logistics industry, and discover the skills and experience necessary to progress their careers within the industry.

The Queensland LINC information was developed by SAFC in partnership with the Queensland T&L industry and Queensland Transport’s Industry Capability Unit.

"The strong interest being shown in LINC by the other states is a strong reinforcement of the forward-thinking approach of the SA Freight Council," SAFC Chairman, Mr Vincent Tremaine, said today.

"The jobs crisis is driven by the projected doubling of the national freight task in the 20 years to 2020 – a period we are already almost half way through he said.

"LINC websites exclusively designed for a specific State – where information available on that site is significantly enhanced for that region - will help improve public access to T & L careers information in that State, and also introduce that sector to greater numbers of people willing and able to work in our industry."

Mr Tremaine said Queensland was the first state to show interest in LINC, and as such, was the first State to "come on line" after the successful launch of the South Australian website.

"Queensland Transport should be commended for its foresight in identifying the skills crisis facing the transport and logistics industry as a key issue that needs to be addressed if the Queensland economy is to continue to prosper. They have moved quickly to utilise LINC as part of the solution to attracting and retaining people in the transport and logistics industry."

Mr Tremaine said "The challenge for the industry to combat the worker shortage was to change "people’s mindset", by educating the community to the opportunities, diversity and challenges of the rapidly evolving and sophisticated transport and logistics industry.

"Much of this is a generational legacy of a strong, male-orientated, labour-intensive workforce. We suffer from a severe and unwarranted identity crisis of being a classic blue-collar industry, with traditionally low pay and poor career pathways.

"Yet there are significant opportunities in today’s increasingly complex and integrated industry.

"We believe LINC is a vital step in the process of attracting new people to the industry, and we are confident the program will continue to be embraced on a national level."

The revamped LINC is supported by a new web portal powered by the national Transport and Logistics Centre’s TILIS technology. TILIS is a web based portal technology developed for the T&L industry which allows the SAFC to edit, update, manage and grow LINC in many directions. TILIS is the engine that drives LINC, and LINC is the vehicle that carries information and ideas to young people and mature workers across Australia.

TILIS gives anyone access 24/7 to LINC, from any public internet terminal, in a café, a school or at home. It allows people to share data and applications, to engage with each other and with the experts. It is a true collaborative web enabled technology. It has the ability to video stream, as well as the capacity to provide specific State-based information, dependent on the location of the visitor to the site.
